So I have now played my first game with my PanO (and expanded my force further...). How did it go Martin do I hear you cry? Don't worry dear reader, I shan't keep you in suspense any longer, it was a....
VICTORY!!!
And a resounding one at that. Now to be fair to Rory, my opponent, he was more concerned with showing me the rules than pounding my face in. I on the other hand was not constrained by such concerns and took full advantage of my shiny (ok, base-coated) new Father-Knight to bring the pain to him. I used the Starter Force from Operation: Icestorm; a Father-Knight (bought off Bruce) with Boarding Shotgun, a Nisse Sniper, an ORC with Multi-Rifle, 3 Fusiliers with Combi-Rifles and an Akali Sikh Commando. He had the Nomad Starter set from Icestorm, so a wannabe-ORC, an impressively top-heavy and inappropriately-armoured Reverend healer (Medium Infantry...really???), a Sniper from hell, a Zero with stealth stuff and 3 chaps/chapettes beginning with G who are I assume their answer to Fusiliers. The superior technology of the PanO won out; I critted on my first shot, dropping a basic guy which lowered his orders pool, and then my Father-Knight showed the Reverend Lady why a plunging neckline is a silly idea on the battlefield (something my Frostgrave crew will have to bear in mind) by shotgunning her as an ARO. This put the brakes on his plans and I closed the trap, my ORC shrugging off his Zero and Sniper, whilst the Father-Knight did in his Heavy Infantry (just surviving a flamethrower). I lost a Fusilier and the Father-Knight in the end, but the Father-Knight was a calculated trade to hold his sniper in place for my ORC to get him/her.
So, thoughts? The game plays really well. We didn't use Hackers at all, or anything fancy but that didn't detract from my enjoyment. I love the ARO system and the thought that you have to put into your turn. The boards look great even with just the card terrain and the rules seem really sensible. I've spent the last two days planning lists and trying to justify buying the Support Box, but it will have to wait as I've got real-life expenses to take care of. It seems to be really in-depth, with the various skill levels, which I like, and the models are stunning which makes a huge difference. I like the Modifier system, and rolling under but close to the TN, rather than 'oh a 20, you win again' or 'three ones, you're hit'.
Next up will be a 200 point game with Ben I think, and one with Sean to get them used to the rules. Then we will start looking at the fancier stuff and seeing how it works.
May i throw down a Nomad coloured gauntlet? I feel Rory didn't get the opportunity to show what the Nomad Nation is capable of bringing to the table. TAG dance..?
